The General Meeting takes place at Carlton Pentecostal Church on the 3rd Thursday of the month. Doors open at 10:00am ready for a 10:30am start. Come along to hear all the latest details about Interest Group activities, sign up for future Events and chat with fellow u3a members. Tea, coffee, water and biscuits are available.
Most months there is a guest speaker and one or more of the Interest Groups put on a display where you can find out more about that group's activities and have a chance to talk to some of the group. In June and December the meeting is more of a social event.

High Drama at our June Social
General Meeting: June 2026 Those of us who were able to attend our June social, wonderfully organised by Gayle Harris, had an excellent time. A mock trial of an actual local 1897 murder case was presented to us as if we were in a court of law, and the audience were organised into juries who had to weigh up the evidence and decide on a verdict. We were introduced to the case by Mark Reynolds as the narrator, whose introduction was peppered by puns from TV crime dramas for us to recognize and groan at. Then we were treated to… Read More

The Criminal Justice System
General Meeting: May 2026 Due to our speaker cancelling at short notice Janet managed to find a replacement, Martin Rowley who gives a number of talks on various topics and ours was the Criminal Justice System. Martin’s delivery was fast and punchy and accompanied by a plethora of information and statistics on a rapidly moving screen. The main thrust of the talk was to increase our awareness of the inbuilt unfairness, corruption and criminality at every level of the system, including the Police, the Prison system, governments, corporate businesses, the Probation service, MPs and titled individuals and more. We were… Read More

A Storm in a Tea Shop
General Meeting: April 2026 Dr Ann Featherstone gave us an entertaining, very well researched talk about the difficult working conditions of waitresses in 1908, a time when the Women’s Suffrage was at its high point. Waitresses at the time were poorly paid for long shifts, fed poor quality meals, had to pay for their uniforms, and worst of all, were allowed no tips to supplement their pay. They could also be dismissed on the spot if customer complained, which is what happened at an ABC cafe in central London in April 1908. However on this occasion, led by the head… Read More

Blood Bikes
General Meeting: March 2026 Jon Fryer and Roger Wakefield gave a very entertaining and informative talk about their work with Blood Bikes a voluntary service which began in 1962 and in Nottingham in 2013 in which there are 161 volunteers, 10 bikes, 9 cars and some mini bikes. Jon is a biker and a driver, Roger is a driver only. There is no government funding and all volunteers completely unpaid. They offer an out of hours service for the NHS between the hours of 18:00 and 06:00 and 24 hours at weekends and bank holidays. As the name of the… Read More

In the Event of Bad Weather
If the weather or driving conditions are bad on the day of a General Meeting, there is a possibility that we may decide to cancel the meeting. If that happens we will post a very obvious notice on the website and email all our members. If in doubt please check those before setting out from home. If you do not have an email address, you may ring our U3A number 0778 742 7200 and speak to a member of the committee.
