  • Estate Planning

General Meeting: February 2026 Janina from Co-Op Estate Planning spoke clearly and knowledgeably on a topic highly relevant to mostly retired listeners.  However the very nature of the subject meant it was serious and complex. The two main topics centred around Wills and Lasting Power of Attorney. Writing and executing wills was the first topic and Janina went through the various partnerships and family groupings which would all have a bearing on the writing of a will and how the wishes of the deceased were followed or not.  There were numerous permutations as to what may constitute a partnership and… Read More

  • Bharat Patel, Journalist

General Meeting: January 2026 Bharat Patel talked to us about his time as a journalist travelling the world and now semi-retired he raises funds for Hope Against Cancer. Bharat describes being brought up by a madcap Indian family in Gudjurat and by the time he was eight years old he had lived in three continents, India, Africa and now UK. He delivered a long, fast talk with endless fantastic tales involving a Spanish speaking parrot, Princess Anne, a Bison Burger, Rampton Prison Hospital, the Red Arrows and many, many more. He observed how people from abroad adapt to our customs,… Read More

  • The Multi-tasking Female Honey Bee

General Meeting: November 2025 Alec Thomson is an experienced bee keeper and Chair of the Nottingham Bee Keepers Association. He shared his vast knowledge and passion with us, concentrating on the female honey bee, the hardest working bee in the hive. He listed her jobs under headings such as water collector, cleaner, pest controller, interior decorator and shared beautiful close-up photos of her busy at work. All this was magnificent and impressive, not just the talk but the bees themselves. We learnt about swarms, the Queen Bee, looking after bees, their peculiar waggle dance, pollination, producing honey and so much… Read More

  • History of Music in America

General Meeting: October 2025 Roger Browne made a welcome return visit, having last visited in 2024, and gave an entertaining and informative talk about the history of music in America. Roger, who is President of the Stockport Operatic Society and began singing and playing music at the age of 4, talked about Irving Berlin and his family’s escape from Russia in the late 1890s and how he, as a Jewish man, ended up writing White Christmas and God Bless America. George and Ira Gershwin’s family were migrants from Ukraine and Roger described their upbringing and the encouragement George received from… Read More
