Following early notice given at the May General Meeting on the proposed day trip to Bletchley Park on Thursday 3rd September, 32 members have currently expressed interest in going.

Bletchley Park was the central hub of Allied code breaking during WWII, employing nearly 10,000 people, including Alan Turing, Gordon Welchman, Bill Tutte, Dilly Knox, and Nigel de Grey.

It was a highly secretive and essential job to decrypt Axis communications, and mathematicians had the right sort of brains to work on decryptions.

We have to thank the three mathematicians from Polish Intelligence for originally intercepting the German decryptor, dismantling it, and then making their own. For years Poland had been monitoring German communications and in 1932 they broke the German code. Their information and machines were passed to French and then British Intelligence as the mathematicians fled following the invasion of Poland. The British progressed with the variants. It was a continuous battle every day.

After the war, in 1946 Bletchley Park’s operations ceased. The site eventually became a museum showcasing the history of codebreaking, early computing, and cryptography. Visitors can explore the original huts, see Enigma machines, and learn about the extraordinary efforts of the codebreakers who played a pivotal role in Allied victory.

Join us and be amazed. There is so much to learn about.
