The day the lights went out

June 2025: General Meeting

With thanks to Gayle, Teresa and the team for inspiration
'Roll up Roll up.' On the stroke of ten, welcomed by Meeters and Greeters, members surged through the doors ready to have a good time. We crossed our fingers hoping our writing table with its sepia photos of traction engine and steam yacht rides, surrounded by stories and poems would encourage members to join our storytelling endeavours.

Judicious sizing up of hoops, potting golf balls, cards, tossing coins and enthusiastic lifting of the football table ensued, when just as the morning was reaching its zenith, suddenly all the lights went out, plunging us into darkness with our writing table disappearing into virtual obscurity.

For a split second I thought the announcement was alerting us to 'a controlled explosion.' Were our writings to go up in smoke? Would our poems and pictures be lost forever and would our table be sent to smithereens?' Quickly I took the opportunity of taking a photo of our stand, only to realize that the warning was about a 'controlled evacuation!' It transpired later that an unfortunate digger had sabotaged our power lines.

Sadly we cleared the stall, taking down our photos, poems and pictures. I had enjoyed the event, despite my urgent need to make improvements on my hand to eye coordination. I waited for my lift with final survivors of the morning, one who on arrival, had pondered on the possibility of power lines being chopped. I asked her whether she had psychic powers to which she hesitated, but I was left wondering whether Gypsy May predictions might come in handy in future.
