Appliqué is ornamental needlework in which pieces or patches of fabric in different shapes and patterns are sewn or stuck, onto a larger piece to form a picture or pattern. It is commonly used as decoration.  The technique is accomplished either by hand stitching or machine. Appliqué is commonly practised with various fabrics and textiles. 

The term appliqué is derived from French and Latin verbs appliquer and applicare, respectively, which both mean to apply or attach. 

There are three main methods of appliqué: Machine Appliqué, Hand Appliqué and Fused Appliqué. There are different types of using these methods, such as smooth edge appliqué, raw edge appliqué, reverse appliqué, decorative appliqué.

This group is open to all not just the ladies of the u3a, if Tom Daly can have a TV programme on knitting and crochet then the men of the U3a can have a go too!

July 2026

The group has been going now since January 2026 and has proved to be enjoyable and creative.  Scraps of fabric have been used to make wall hangings, designs on the back of a jacket, framed pictures etc.

Members have been surprised at what they can achieve by just using scraps of fabric they would have possibly thrown away to create a beautiful piece of work and in some cases art. Over the next few months we will be looking at ideas for Christmas, its not that far away.  Any members that would care to join us you will be made very welcome.

We have lots of equipment and scraps of fabric, including sewing machines available to use at the meetings.

We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Pentecostal Church at 10am to 12, coffee and teas are kindly provided by the church of which we each make a £2 donation (we even get biscuits)
